Our New Baby a Kaw 2003 Voyager

Marge & Steve on the XII

Every one has been asking about our new baby and how it rides, well let me tell you what people don't know is the story behind the purchase.  It was the morning of April 14th, a pleasant Saturday with blue skies with soft clouds in abundance.  Marge had something on her mind about motorcycles, I guess.  She'd asked, "let's go to Hubbard and look at the motorcycles at that Hornung place."  Uh-huh I thought, so I asked, "just to look right?"

"Yeah she says, just to look.  We'll do some "re-con" just to see what they got," all the while with a straight face.  I don't see it coming, not even when she asks, "can we take the truck?"  Well, I guess that would be alright I thought, just in case, of course we happen to see something that we just couldn't live without.  What that would be I hadn't a clue, I'm not to crazy about the newer bikes.  Definitely not to gung-ho about the sport/cafe racer style bikes and their seating styles on this ol' bod, let alone Marge's.

So, off we go to Hornung's to do "re-con" as it were, never in a million years did I suspect that Marge was going to the shop with a purchasing mindset at heart.  We get to Hubbard and as we're pulling up on the outskirts of town we couldn't help but notice there was trucks, cars and motorcycles everywhere.  With a big grill sitting outside as well getting ready to make foodage later we suspected.  We had no idea that it was there open house for the year, we were flabbergasted. After walking around smellin' all the new bikes as it were, we noticed an older but still reliable Voyager sitting over in there north-west corner of the display room.  We'd maybe seen this very bike 4 years ago or maybe they had one just like it then, but knew the price was out of reach at that time.

So, here it was again, it had returned.  We were lucky to even get to talk to it's former owner who was there talking to someone else about how he had just a little while back traded his ol' Voyager for the new '07 Yamaha touring bike.  I pretended to be interested in the Yamaha as well while I listened, I didn't know that the conversation he was having with this other biker who was also looking at maybe purchasing one for himself was the very guy who formerly owned the Voyager we were interested in.  I put two and two together and figured it out that he was possibly the old bike's owner that we just might purchase.

We asked the new owner of Hornung's if we could take the Voyager for a bit of a test ride.  Now, I hadn't ridden a motorcycle since November of '96, during what appeared to be an impending snow storm.  I had put my younger daughter on the gas tank and my oldest rode behind me, while I put my feet down on the snow to balance the bike home for one terrifying mile.  Things we remember doing when we were young and stupid, but that night I covered that KZ900 and haven't ever rode it since.  I jumped on this Voyager like it was November '96 all over again, fired it up, dropped it into 1st gear leaving the store in our rearview mirrors like I'd always been riding motorcycles everyday.  With a very confident Marge on the back, I was pullin' back on that throttle like I was born to do this, all the while trying to remember what it was Gary, the shop's mechanic tried to tell me about the 1st gear.  Oh well, to this day I still don't know what it was he said and was even more amazed that no one at the shop ever asked to even see if I had a motorcycle license.  Getting used to shifting and all the bells and whistles this bike of technology had to offer was pretty fun, 40 minutes of it.  I couldn't get the cruise to work though after trying and trying, so when we got back I mentioned that to Gary and he said he'd order a new micro cruise switch that's attaches to the front brake, which he did, he was also nice enough to install it when it came in later.  At a great price, free.

Do we need to install anything else on this bike?  At the moment I can't think of a thing, since it's former owner took great care of it, even writing down all the various cities he was in when he changed the oil and where it was serviced and for what.  He'd installed heated grips, front and rear air shocks which are a very nice touch compared to my old '75 Kaw.  I believe this bike may have already came with the air shocks as a stock item but he replaced the rear ones with Progressives.  I also couldn't help but notice that there was a towing hitch that was already installed as well.  I just now need to find a 1" extended tow bar for it.  We're looking at all kinds of camping trailers, at the moment, we haven't decided on one as of yet, there's so many good ones out there.

The longest trip that we've been on so far is from here to Sioux Falls, SD and back in one day mind you.  Took 14 hours, through several thunderstorms, we stayed dry though, butt was my behind ever sore.  I think I'm going to have to look into some soft air seats or those gel ones if I want to go to the Pacific Ocean from the center of the Midwest some time.  Overall the nice thing is we have no reservation about just jumping on the Voyager and setting our sails to the winding highways in front of us to wherever I hearts want.

So if you see a couple of ol' Kawasaki kids rollin' past ya, give us a hearty wave, we'll be sure to wave back.

    We're equal opportunity wavers.

    August 13

A night spent viewing the heavens and a few Perseids.

Last night was supposed to be the peak for the Perseid meteor showers, unfortunately we saw just as many farm trucks than meteors.  Let me preface our night with us scouting around the Iowa country side looking for a quiet country back road that we thought wouldn't be very well traveled.  Most corn fields in Iowa have an entrance area that is mostly grass where the combines will enter the fields to harvest the corn in the fall.

We happened upon such an entrance area larger than most NY apartments, where we put our car in backwards and got out our folded loungers.  The sun had not set yet and all was good since we brought along our cans of Root Beer and a freshly made bag of microwaved Kettlecorn.  A couple of blankets are a nice touch as well.  I did know how cool it was going to get before sunrise and I'd looked up the temperatures that were predicted by the hour before we set off.  I even knew where the light breezes were going to come from, also which area of the sky to watch.

I remember the first thing we saw coming up behind us and to the right was a pickup truck.  The driver came to a stop at the stop sign looked us over like we might be some kind of terrorist ya know and slowly drove on down the road to the north back to the highway a mile up the road.  Iowa in it's infinite wisdom divided up the land in one mile increments with gravel roads, so if your looking for someone's address and they tell you to go two miles north out of Green Mountian and then 1 mile west off of the Beaman blacktop, you know just exactly how to get there.  You don't even need to look at your odometer.

Friday night the 11th, we went out onto another piece of blacktop and couldn't understand the amount of traffic up and down this rural road.  All of these headlights were interfering with our eyes, even if you closed them and turned your back, it still took a while for your eyes to adjust to the darkness of space once again.  Probably in the mean time the meteors were everywhere, then after your eyes got adjusted to the dark there weren't any to be seen.  So last night I was determined to still find an ideal spot north of town with a few of the northeastern sky before the moon rise.  Yes, I even knew when it would becoming up above the horizon so as to interfere with our ability to view this phenomenon.  So at around 10:10 p.m. local time it was just about the time to pack it in.

So Perseids meteors 7, farm vehicles 5.  You see we had to stay out there to see if we could see more meteors streaking across the night sky or if we were going to see more pickups.

Well, they say 2007 Perseids will be even better viewing due to the lack of full moon rise.

    We'll just have to see.

    January 18

Learning something new, keeps you young.

What is it about taking a martial arts weapons class that really pumps you up?  I've come to believe it is empowering beyond what your capable of during an average day.  Think about it, you take other peoples problems coming at you all day and you can't defend yourself against them, you just take it.  Because it's the nice thing to do, isn't it?

I returned to class tonight after a time of not attending on a regular basis and was shown some of my sparring moves that I recalled quickly enough, although very much still in the rough phase.  There was a young girl who was also taking up the same weapon as myself, so we were put across from each other after being shown the first 3 movements.

Can you imagine this little girl across from a big bald 300 lb. guy with a weapon coming at you?  I'll give her this, she stood her ground, the staff weapon that was in her hand as well as the one that was coming at her, were taller than she was.  This is what keeps us older people young, getting involved in a young person's dream of continuing her martial arts studies.  Of course this is just one example how we as a community can be involved in the boosting a young person along, towards a life time of learning.

Her mother was watching her from behind; I could tell she was so surprised at her daughter's strength to make her stand.  We come at each other with a stabbing motion with these staffs; she would turn her head so as to not to see me coming at her.  Mom was there to make sure she wasn't going to be hurt.

Mom came up to me after the class and thanked me for helping her daughter, I was touched.  I only wish things would've been different for my daughters and thier mother, with the divorce and all, so I could've had the time to spend with them in such a class as this.  I feel we would've bonded better than what we have today,
I certainly would feel a whole lot younger.

    January 02

    Sure; these people vote too.

I'm a little behind, what with all of this technology and what we all can do with it, but I did get some Halloween pictures posted of Marge and myself out on the town, in "LosAmesis."

Went to a great BBQ place along Duff Avenue in Ames called Hickory Park.  We do this every Halloween, Marge will make a costume for herself or me and off we go in our get-ups to eat.

Yes everyone, Marge made her costume and that is her real hair.  I was shocked how great it looked when she came downstairs and said she was ready to go.  So the first picture I snapped was of us, by holding the camera out at arms length.

For New Years we got dressed up once again, however we didn't bother to ask anyone to take a picture of us.  Maybe we'll get around to all of that sometime soon.

    Happy New Year everyone.
